Artist Statement

다른 사람을 만날 때, 나는 가끔 그들의 외적인 모습으로 판단을 하곤 한다. 하지만 사실 내가 정말 관심을 갖는 것은 그들의 인상이다. 두 사람의 성격은 결코 같지 않기 때문에 각 사람의 인상이 저마다 다르게 다가온다. 나는 이런 인상이 만나는 사람이나 처한 상황에 따라 어떻게 변화하는지를 바라보며, 때때로 실망을 느끼기도 하고, 다른 때에는 깊은 감명을 받기도 했다. 그러던 어느 날 문득 깨달았다. 나는 내면에 대해 이해하는 데에는 소홀했고, 오직 다른 사람들에게만 집중하고 있었던 것이다. 그래서 이 작품 시리즈는 나 자신에게 시선을 돌려 진정한 나를 탐구하기 위한 여정의 시작이 되었다.

나는 다른 사람들의 이야기를 듣는 데 익숙하였지만, 내 이야기를 표현하는 것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아니었다. 하지만 시간이 지나면서, 말을 통한 소통보다는 예술을 통해 내 이야기를 전하는 것이 더 효과적이라는 것을 발견하게 되었다. 그렇게 나는 내 작업을 넓혀갈 수 있었다.

내 작품은 내가 진정으로 누구인지 탐구하는 동시에, 외부에서 받은 정신적 상처를 치유하고 위안을 주는 역할도 한다. 사람들이 가지는 개성은 그 안에서 여러 형태로 존재하며, 상황이나 만나는 상대에 따라 다르게 드러나는 것을 알게 되었다. 그래서 나는 이러한 개성을 12개의 서로 다른 캐릭터로 시각화하고, 초상화 형식으로 정리했다. 각 캐릭터는 고유의 이름과 세련된 취미를 지니고 있으며, 자신만의 맨션에서 대부분의 삶을 보내고 있다.

결과적으로 이 작업은 각 캐릭터의 초상화, 맨션, 그리고 그들의 집 내부를 보여주는 시리즈로 발전하게 되었다. 그들의 일상 생활을 관찰하면서, 나는 결국 내 내면이 진정으로 나타내고자 하는 바를 반영하게 된다. 이렇게 나 자신을 탐구하는 과정은 나에게 깊은 의미를 더해주었고, 나의 예술 세계를 풍부하게 만드는 원동력이 되고 있다.

When I meet others, I sometimes judge them based on their outward appearance, but I am mainly interested in their impressions, as no two people have similar characters. I have noticed that these impressions manifest differently depending on whom they meet and the variables of the situation they are in, which sometimes leads me to feel disappointment and other times admiration. Then one day, I realized that I hadn’t paid any attention to understanding my own inner self, and that my interest had been solely focused on others. This series of works originated from turning my attention from others towards myself, to explore who I truly am.

Being accustomed to listening to others’ stories and not being used to telling my own, it was not an easy task to express my own story through my work. However, I found that communicating through art, rather than words, was more effective for me, which led to the further development of my work.

The work aims to explore who I really am while also providing healing and comfort for the mental damage I have received from external sources.

As mentioned earlier, personalities exist in various forms within a person and manifest differently depending on the situation or the person they encounter. I have visualized these personalities as 12 different characters and composed them in a portrait format. Each character has a unique name and their own refined hobbies. They each possess their own mansion, where they spend most, if not all, of their lives.

Therefore, the work develops into a series showcasing each character’s portrait, mansion, and the interiors of their homes. The focus is on observing their daily lives, which ultimately reflects what my inner self truly wants to express.
